Therapy that looks beneath the symptoms

Anxiety, self-criticism, perfectionism, emotional shutdown or relationship difficulties often carry a deeper story.

Together we can explore the protective patterns shaped by past experiences, helping you move from survival and self-blame towards greater understanding, connection and self-trust.

When life feels stuck, therapy can help you find your way forward

Sometimes people come to therapy because they have spent years coping. On the outside, they may appear to be managing, yet inside, they feel anxious, emotionally drained, disconnected or unsure of who they really are.

Therapy offers more than a place to talk. It is an opportunity to gently explore the experiences that have shaped you, understand the protective patterns that may still be influencing your life, and begin reconnecting with yourself in ways that feel more authentic and fulfilling.

How therapy can help

Therapy can help you make sense of difficult thoughts, feelings, and experiences. It can support you understand why certain patterns keep repeating, how past experiences may still affect you, and what healthier ways forward may be available.

Working together, the aim is not to judge your reactions but to understand them. From that understanding, it becomes easier to make different choices, develop self-awareness, and respond to life with more confidence and clarity.

Alongside talking therapy, I integrate psychoeducation, relational exploration and somatic awareness to support a deeper understanding of yourself, your relationships and the protective responses that shape your experiences.

Hello, I’m Sue Bird, an accredited psychotherapist based in Buckingham and online. I work with adults navigating some of life’s most difficult challenges, including trauma, anxiety, grief, and the weight of past experiences.

I believe that the relationship we build in the therapy room is the most important tool for change. My role is to stand alongside you as we navigate these complexities together, offering a steady, reliable presence while you rediscover your own inner resources and capacity for growth.

Services

My approach encourages reflection as much as action. You’ll walk away not only with new techniques, but with a deeper understanding of how and why they work. The goal is to leave you with ideas and skills that feel clear, useful, and genuinely meaningful in your life.

Anxiety & Overwhelm

Many people live in a constant state of internal alertness, feeling unable to relax or switch off. Together we can explore how anxiety may be connected to nervous system survival responses, hypervigilance and earlier relational experiences, helping to build understanding and self-compassion.

Shame &
The Inner Critic

Harsh self-criticism often develops as a way of protecting us from rejection, vulnerability or emotional pain. Therapy can help uncover the origins of these critical patterns and support the development of a more compassionate relationship with yourself.

Relational Trauma & Attachment Wounds

Early experiences can shape how safe we feel in relationships, how we view ourselves, and how we respond emotionally to closeness, conflict or disconnection. Therapy offers a space to explore these patterns gently and build healthier ways of relating.

People Pleasing & Boundaries

Many people learn to prioritise others’ needs in order to maintain safety, connection or approval. Together we can explore these protective patterns, strengthen boundaries, and reconnect with your own needs, feelings and sense of self.

Feeling Disconnected
From Yourself

Living in survival mode can leave people feeling emotionally numb, uncertain of who they are, or disconnected from their body, needs or emotions. Therapy can help support reconnection, self-awareness and a greater sense of authenticity and aliveness.

Intrusive Thoughts & Hypervigilance

Intrusive thoughts and heightened alertness can feel frightening or exhausting. Rather than viewing these experiences as signs that something is wrong with you, therapy can help explore them as protective responses shaped by fear, uncertainty or past experiences.

When I am thrown against the shore and caught between the rocks and a hard place, I want to rest there until I can find the strength to do what is next. Not stuck—just waiting, pondering, feeling what it feels like to pause.
